EDUCATION SERVICES: Planning Your Visit

Staff at the Heritage Centre want to make your visit as stress-free and enjoyable as possible.
We strongly recommend that you make a preliminary visit to the Centre as this is an opportunity to meet education staff and discuss in advance your requirements. On booking, a complimentary ticket (for up to 2 people) will be sent to you to use at your convenience.
In the meantime, we hope the following information is useful when planning your visit to us.

Supervision:
The Centre recommends a supervision ratio of one adult to every ten children. Following government advice from the DfEs, the Centre stresses that teachers retain responsibility for groups at all times.

Dress:
Since the Heritage Centre is based in a woodland setting please dress appropriately for an outdoor site with uneven surfaces. Stout footwear recommended.

Access:
Every effort will be made to include students with special educational or medical needs. Special attention should be given to appropriate supervision ratios. The Museum's galleries are accessible to visitors in wheelchairs (with a lift to all 5 galleries, cafe and research library). Please telephone the Centre's Learning Officer to discuss any special arrangements.

Heritage Shop:
The shop sells items suitable for children. Please limit groups using the shop to 15 students at one time. These pupils must be fully supervised.

Lunch Facilities:
There are picnic sites available around the site for packed lunches, weather permitting. The 'School Room' may be used in wet weather (this space can accommodate between 25-30 students) Gallery 1 may also be used for any overspill.

Coats and Bag Storage:
These may be left in the 'School Room', which is locked when not in use.

Health & Safety:
For safety and security a perimeter fence encloses the site. Entrance and exit are through the staffed reception area. We recommend teachers refer to the DfES document 'Health and Safety of Pupils on Educational Visits' (2001) and their own school's risk assessment procedure. A risk assessment is included in this pack, this includes fire assembly/evacuation points to be used. The DfES recommend that schools carry out risk assessments before their visit.

Accidents and first aid:
All accidents should be reported to the Reception where appropriate action can be taken.
